Interventions for myopia have evolved significantly in recent years, with multiple options that have demonstrated comparable results: specific ophthalmic lenses, soft contact lenses, overnight orthokeratology and atropine. However, beyond clinical efficacy, current evidence points to a decisive factor: the patient’s visual experience is what determines whether a treatment is maintained over time. The use of contact lenses is an increasingly popular solution for correcting vision problems, but continued use depends largely on two key factors: the material and the comfort experience throughout the day.

This is not merely a subjective feeling: comfort is a determining factor in preventing discontinuation. Several studies show that discomfort is the main reason for discontinuation(1), with rates ranging from 12% to 27.4%. Dryness, irritation, a foreign body sensation or unstable vision are among the most common complaints.

Compliance sits at the heart of successful outcomes, and most children need meaningful support to achieve it. The wearer is usually a young child or early teenager; therefore, the family’s involvement shapes the daily habits that determine treatment success. Parents or other responsible guardians guide routines, supervise lens handling, remind children about wear time, initiate dosing in the case of pharmaceutical intervention, and help the child understand why consistency matters. Parental myopia is a well‑established risk factor for childhood myopia, therefore families in which one or both parents are myopic often appreciate the importance of early intervention. This awareness can strengthen motivation and reinforce the message that treatment is a long‑term investment in eye health. Older siblings can also contribute meaningfully, particularly if they are already on a myopia‑care plan themselves. Their experience allows them to model good habits and offer encouragement, including during school hours when parents are not present, helping reinforce the need for consistent wear.

Corneal topography is an essential tool used by eye care professionals to analyze the shape and curvature of the cornea, the transparent front part of the eye. This examination is crucial for fitting contact lenses, as it helps ensure the lenses match the unique shape of a patient’s cornea. Proper contact lens fitting not only improves comfort but also enhances visual acuity and eye health.
