MYLO: Myopia Management
Discover more about myopia management. Recent years have seen the devastating impact of global health crises – the most notable being Covid-19, of course – but what of the other, less ‘media-present’ crises, such as the myopia crisis?
Over the past decade, the prevalence of myopia has increased around the world. Some studies estimate that myopia will affect five billion people worldwide by 2050. The global myopia crisis signals challenging times ahead for eye care professionals.
Myopia management: what are the implications of myopia?
Left unchecked, the outlook is pretty grim. Myopia can lead to irreversible vision loss and even blindness. While myopia can be easily corrected, if measures aren’t taken to keep it low, it can progress to dangerous levels that will increase the incidence of cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy.
As stated, myopia can increase the risk of serious ocular complications but what’s really alarming is that these complications are irrespective of the patient’s level of myopia (see Table 1).
Table 1: Increase of ocular complications lifetime risk.
Myopia management and averting the crisis
Considering the statistics, it is critical that the prevalence and magnitude of myopia is kept as low as possible. It has been found that most myopic patients will benefit from even a small degree of myopia slowing down – so a little improvement can help a lot. This is why myopia management is vitally important.
How can I help as a practitioner?
When considering the onset of myopia, there are some critical factors that are out of anybody’s control: these include factors such as family history, age-related refractive errors and ethnicity.
Fortunately, however, there are some lifestyle factors that can be controlled, such as increasing time spent outdoors, limiting digital device usage and reducing time spent doing near work.
Currently, there’s also a wide range of myopia management intervention strategies, with soft contact lenses, such as mark’ennovy’s MYLO, being one of the safest, most convenient and effective.
Brien Holden Vision Institute’s patented Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) design is one of the very few available in the world for on-label myopia management.
More about MYLO
MYLO, powered by Brien Holden’s patented Extended Depth of Focus technology, has been granted the CE marking as a medical device specifically for myopia management.
“The performance of MYLO is the result of the lens’ Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) design. The lens design provides a signal to slow eye growth by degrading quality of the image behind the eye and therefore reducing the risk of the eye growing posteriorly,” states Professor Padmaja Sankaridurg, Head of the ‘Global Myopia Centre’ at the Brien Holden Vision Institute Ltd.
