At mark’ennovy, we’re passionate about the future of vision and this is why we are 100% committed to science and innovation in every way. We are invested in vision’s continuous improvement and we are proud to support various organizations and universities whose main fields of research relate to contact lenses.

One such project that we’re happy to be involved in is European Young Eye (EYE), a research project funded by European Union´s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 956274.

The objective of the project is to advance scientific knowledge in Vision Science, in order to develop advanced presbyopic therapeutic solutions, which will positively impact the quality of patients’ lives. Also, to acquire an in-depth understanding of the advantages and drawbacks of the solutions currently available. The intention is for new contact lens prototypes to be developed (hopefully outperforming the current alternatives), which aim to meet the needs of the presbyopic population. The goal is: “Comfortable contact lenses that provide good vision at all distances.”

As a part of the EYE project, we invited a group of students to visit the mark’ennovy manufacturing facility in Madrid. The tour featured all the stages of the production process, as well as an explanation of how every contact lens is evaluated, approved, validated, registered and monitored.

Here some students kindly share their tour experiences:

“It was a very enriching tour. Not only did I discover more about the company (its philosophy and structure) through the presentation video, I also learnt a lot from a technical point of view. As we visited the manufacturing room, we were shown the different devices, a part of the logistic supply chain, the different lenses, which gave us a very insightful description of the lathing process. I admired the overall structure of the site, which for me reflects the professionalism of the company. Also, I liked the attention dedicated to security and hygiene measures.” – Clara Lim

“Two things caught my attention: the starting material, a block of resilient and opaque material that becomes flexible and transparent and, the second thing, the manufacturing process. This process is customized (each contact lens has unique characteristics depending on the customer) but, at the same time, is fully automated.” – Almudena Crook

“I was surprised that around 6,000 contact lenses can be fabricated in one day! And all the lenses are personalized with specific parameters for each patient.” – Alicia Lopez Raso

“The tour was amazing to me, as this was the first time I saw the manufacturing of contact lenses and the people were amazing! To me, it was perfect and I would love for them to keep it up and change nothing.” – Darshan Ramasubramanian

We’re delighted to hear this positive feedback and to be able to assist these future eye-care professionals.

To conclude:

“What changes would I like to see in the eye-care industry? I believe there is a general lack of understanding of the disorders and diseases related to the eyes in the majority of the society. Considering the increasing number of people with eye diseases due to changes occurring in our way of living, I hope this industry could reach out to people more directly to raise awareness of the problems linked to the eyes, for instance myopia progression. In particular, they should be encouraged to follow the good practices to take care of their eyes. Also, there could be other changes linked to the affordability of the eye-disorders corrections.” – Clara Lim

From mark’ennovy, we would also like to take the opportunity to congratulate the researcher Alicia López. At the 10th Visual and Physiological Optics Meeting 2022 held in Cambridge (UK), Alicia talked about the correlation in time between the ocular surface temperature and tear film thickness models and she received a special mention for her presentation.
