Hydrogel vs silicone hydrogel: what really changes

Traditional hydrogel soft lenses offer good biocompatibility thanks to their high water content, but they have a significant limitation: oxygen permeability depends almost entirely on the water contained in the lens. When hydration decreases, comfort can also decrease.

The introduction of silicone hydrogel represented a major step forward. The silicone component allows oxygen to pass through 5–7 times more effectively than conventional hydrogels, (2) improving ocular physiology and reducing symptoms such as redness, corneal oedema and eye strain.

Although the overall drop-out rate remains around 21.7%, the use of silicone hydrogel lenses is associated with a significant reduction in this phenomenon.

Be Free Day: designed to maximise comfort

Against this backdrop of evolving materials, Be Free Day was created with the aim of offering a superior user experience that remains stable over time.

A biomimetic matrix for greater biocompatibility

The lens is constructed on a silicone hydrogel matrix coated with a layer of phosphorylcholine, a biomimetic molecule derived from the phospholipids of human cell membranes. This structure:

  • increases biocompatibility
  • attracts and retains water
  • reduces the adhesion of tear proteins
  • keeps the surface more hydrated and comfortable

These characteristics make it highly biocompatible, capable of attracting and retaining water molecules.

Nanoscale Film Technology (NFT) is applied to the outer surface, an advanced coating that mimics the properties of natural tears in terms of density and osmolarity. This layer:

  • improves lubrication
  • stabilises the tear film
  • increases resistance to lipid and protein deposits
  • keeps the lens clean for longer

A more stable experience with fewer interruptions

The combination of advanced materials and biomimetic coatings makes Be Free Day a lens designed to offer:

  • constant comfort throughout the day
  • less build-up of deposits
  • more stable vision
  • greater wearer satisfaction

It is not simply an advanced contact lens, but a tool that tangibly facilitates the practitioner’s work and improves the wearer’s experience.

In a context where regular daily wear is essential, offering a lens that the wearer is genuinely motivated to wear every day represents a decisive advantage.
